The Northern Counties Club History
The Northern Counties Club is the 31st oldest private members club in the world. The Club was founded in 1829 at a meeting of prominent local businessmen in The Assembly Rooms. Three years later the committee agreed to erect a Club House, which was to be the central building in the old Eldon Square and £4,000 was subsequently raised from Club members for the purpose. The Club moved to its present site in Hood Street in 1972 when Eldon Square was redeveloped. Since its foundation, few people of prominence in the North east of England have not been members of the Northern Counties Club.

The Club Today
Although retaining its elegance and all the best traditions of its long history, the Northern Counties Club has moved firmly into the 21st Century. It is a social club providing its members and guests with a quiet sanctuary and relief from the hustle of the city. The dining rooms reflect a subdued elegance with a chef and wine cellar that compare favorably with any in the area. Members gather for business meetings, social events, theatre evenings, wine tastings or just to meet friends for a convivial drink at the bar.

Stuffy rules about dress have been put aside, the only requirement being that members and visitors should be smartly dressed at all times.

Two of the Club’s proudest traditions are that the staff know all the members by name, and give the warmest welcome to members of reciprocal clubs, be they just coming in for refreshment or staying in the Club’s comfortable and spacious bedrooms.
